Just a few months after being appointed in April, USA Cricket announced the resignation of Stuart Law as head coach of the men’s national team. The statement was made on the eve of the Dallas match between USA and Nepal, who are currently participating in League 2 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The dismissal came despite the US men’s historic victory over Pakistan at the ICC 2024 T20 World Cup in Texas, as well as other historic achievements under the law. After wins over Canada and Pakistan at the World Cup and a draw with Ireland in the repechage game in Florida, the United States advanced to the T20 World Cup Super Eight stage. This achievement decisively guaranteed USA Cricket a spot in the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup.
With six wins and three losses, Law has led the US men’s ODI team to second place out of eight teams in the current cycle of the Cricket World Cup League 2 ODI table. The U.S. currently trails Canada by four points, having played three more games. Before Law agreed to a three-year contract with USA Cricket in late spring, the Americans were ranked sixth out of seven teams in the second cycle of the 2022 CWCL with 16 wins, 17 losses, two draws and one tie.
“Given Stuart’s contributions to the program, this was not an easy decision to make,” USA Cricket CEO Jonathan Atkeson said in a press release. I felt it was necessary.”
USA Cricket has not yet provided an explanation for Law’s dismissal. It has struggled to maintain leadership both in and out of the game since the ICC recognized it as an associate member in 2019 following the unsuccessful dissolution of the United States Cricket Association in 2017. Since Ian, the U.S. has had three different head coaches and four different CEOs. Higgins resigned in December 2021.
