The IBA released a statement on Saturday confirming the news.

“The International Boxing Association (IBA) sends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Lionel Erica Fatupaito,” the statement read. “Lionel’s dedication and passion for the sport left an indelible mark on the boxing world and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Our thoughts and those of the entire Samoan sporting community go out to Lionel’s family, his boxers and friends. He will be greatly missed.”

According to AFP, Fatupaito was treated by paramedics at the scene but could not be revived, and his cause of death was listed as “natural causes.”

The only Samoan boxer in Paris, Ato Prozicki-Faoagali, is the top seed in the 92kg division and his first fight is on Sunday.

U.S. Women’s Water Polo continues on track for fourth gold medal

The U.S. women’s water polo team, cheered on by their unofficial cheerleader, rapper Flava Flav, won a landslide victory over Greece (15-6).

This puts the team on the cusp of winning a fourth consecutive gold medal this year, a feat that has never been achieved before by either the men’s or women’s team in the sport.

Spain extends lead over Dominican Republic

Spain took a 3-1 lead over the Dominican Republic in the 70th minute with a goal from Miguel Gutierrez. The goal was initially ruled offside, but a VAR review showed the goal standing. Two Dominican defenders were unable to handle the ball, allowing it to find Gutierrez in the penalty box, who scored with an easy tap-in. It was Spain’s second goal of the second half.

Man holding Italian flag drops wedding ring into Seine

Gianmarco Tamberi apologised to his wife for losing his wedding ring during Friday’s opening ceremony.

The reigning high jump champion proudly held up an Italian flag as he watched his wedding ring fall into the Seine. In a dramatic and somewhat humorous explanation on Instagram, Tamberi attempted to pinpoint what went wrong.

“I’m sorry, my love… too much water, too much weight gained over the last few months, or perhaps an uncontrollable passion for what we were doing. Probably all three, but I felt it slip away, saw it fly… I followed it with my eyes until I saw it bouncing around in the boat.”

He then suggested that his wife also throw her ring into the Seine as a renewal of their vow to be “together forever.”

Chloe Dygert wins bronze medal in road cycling after fall

Chloe Dygert won the bronze medal in women’s road cycling.

Dygert suffered a serious injury in 2020 after falling off a guardrail, but he is just overcoming an Achilles injury this year.

At the first time check, Dygert looked like a gold medal favorite, but then overturned her lost ground, with Australia’s Grace Brown and Great Britain’s Anna Henderson winning gold and silver medals, respectively.

This is Dygert’s Dygert won her third Olympic medal and her first in road cycling. She has won two Olympic medals in track cycling. Dygert is the second American woman to win Olympic medals in both road and track cycling.

Australian gold medalist Grace Brown She won her first Olympic medal, finishing fourth in the event in Tokyo.

Brown finished in 1 minute, 31.59 seconds, beating silver medalist Anna Henderson.

This is the United States’ sixth medal in the women’s individual time trial, the most in Olympic history.

The other American in the race was Taylor Knibb of Washington, D.C., who finished in 19th place.

Organisers ‘confident’ triathlon will go ahead as planned despite rain

Freddie Clayton and Nancy Ing

Olympic organisers said the triathlon events would go ahead as scheduled despite the bad weather.

Organizers told NBC News that heavy rain over the past 24 hours could affect the water quality of the Seine over the next few days and may lead to the cancellation of Sunday’s practice swim.

However, they said they were “confident” the event would go ahead as planned on Tuesday, the day of the triathlon.

The triathlon and marathon swimming events have already come under intense scrutiny due to allegations over the quality of the Seine’s water. Swimming in the Seine has been banned for more than a century, but organizers have invested $1.5 billion to ensure Parisians have a cleaner river to enjoy in the run up to the Olympics and after.

But test results released Friday showed the water quality was just below the standard needed to allow swimming.
