T20 World Cup 2024: Denying claims that the International Cricket Council (ICC) is favouring India in the T20 World Cup 2024, former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt said that Babar Azam’s team likes to blame everyone except themselves for defeats. Butt also speculated that the blame could only be because Pakistan doesn’t like India to win.
Led by captain Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team reclaimed the T20 World Champions trophy after 17 years, defeating South Africa by seven runs in the final in Bridgetown, Barbados on Saturday.
“People often talk about how the ICC is favouring India and the match schedule in Guyana. If we had scored 42 runs off 42 balls, that is, with eight wickets to spare, that would have been our match,” Butt said during a discussion on YouTube show ‘Cricket Baithak’.
“Don’t think that because you are India you have to say something on this matter,” he said in the now-viral video clip.
Salman Butt, 39, who played 33 Tests and 78 ODIs for Pakistan, praised Rohit Sharma’s India team for their “planned approach” and said: “Technically and ability-wise, they are playing better cricket and their cricketing path is much clearer.”
Comparing the Indian and Pakistani cricket teams, Bhatt said the local team does not have a planner while India has clarity of roles, leadership, coaching and how to build bench strength., The team announced their squad for the Zimbabwe series which includes all the young players and a young captain.
“They (India) are going to play five Test matches against Australia this year and before that they will send their A team to play a four-day cricket match, so they are doing all the right things,” he said. Meanwhile, on Pakistan, he said: “If they want the Islamic paper, they want the English card.”
He further elaborated on his comments, saying, “We have a series in Pakistan against Bangladesh and then a four-day match in Australia, in Darwin. After that we move on to district T20 cricket and then the next big event for Pakistan is the 50-over Champions Trophy (in 2025). Who are our planners?”
“It doesn’t matter what we do. And I don’t want India to win. This is not the right mindset,” Bhatt said.
Pakistan’s elimination from the group stage drew strong criticism from former players, with Babar Azam’s team finishing with two wins from four matches after losses to the United States and India.
