Security has been stepped up at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium, built in New York’s Eisenhower Park, for the highly-anticipated India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2024 match to be held on June 9. This comes after Long Island authorities received threats of “lone wolf attacks”, although the governor’s office could not find any evidence to support the threats.
“We are pleased to announce that Nassau County has completed construction of the facility,” said Nassau County Mayor Bruce Blakeman. CBS News Nassau County has received threats of all kinds and authorities take all threats seriously. “We have taken many precautions. The stadium, the surrounding Eisenhower Park, the parking lots and the surveillance areas are secure. We have approximately 100 additional police officers on top of our regular staffing as a precaution,” he said.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder has promised “the greatest security in the history of the United States” to ensure Nassau County is the safest place to be on June 9. “We’re going to take care of every single detail when it comes to the safety and security of the residents here, and I can assure you that the safest place in Nassau County on June 9 is inside the stadium,” Ryder said. New York City Governor Kathy Hawkle said city officials have been working with Nassau County and federal law enforcement for months to ensure the safety and security of visitors and New Yorkers during World Cup matches.
“… We are working closely with the New York State Police Counterterrorism Unit and the New York State Police Troop L based on Long Island. We continue to monitor the situation closely. However, there is no credible threat to public safety at this time. I have directed State Police to implement increased security measures,” Hawkle said.
For the first time, the United States will host a World Cup-sized cricket tournament with eight matches scheduled to be played at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium, including the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match, which is a big draw at any cricket event. Given the large South Asian community in the United States, this Group A clash between two Asian powerhouses is expected to draw a sizeable crowd.
