Pakistan fast bowler Mohammed Amir’s career has been marked by controversy, including his involvement in the match-fixing scandal in England in 2010. Though Amir has already paid the price for his mistake and received a five-year ban from the ICC, fans don’t seem to have forgotten the incident. The veteran fast bowler’s integrity has often been questioned by former players and fans of the Pakistan cricket team. That being said, during the ongoing T20 World Cup in the Americas, a fan accused Amir of the same.
In a viral video, a man can be heard yelling the word “fixer” as Amir walks near the perimeter of Nassau County International Stadium in New York.
However, social media users criticised the man for targeting Amir, especially since Amir has already paid the price.
Here’s how the internet responded:
Amir claimed he was tired of being accused by former cricketers of involvement in the match-fixing scandal after being selected for the national team for the T20 World Cup.
“I have paid for that big mistake. If I look back at my career, I was suspended from 2010 to 2015 and retired from 2020 to 2024, so I have lost nine years, but I have accepted it all as God’s will and moved forward,” Amir told Pakistani journalist Hafiz Mohammed Imran on his YouTube channel.
Amid the ongoing criticism, Amir suggested he was selected for the T20I squad on the basis of his performances in Pakistan’s premier domestic T20 tournament, the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
“There has been a lot of criticism from some people over me and Imad being selected despite not playing any domestic cricket. I asked them what is the pinnacle of domestic T20 competition in Pakistan – the PSL. And both of us (Imad) have played and excelled in the PSL and also feature regularly in other leagues. So what is the problem in selecting us for the T20 format?” he added.
