PESHAWAR:

The spillways of Tarbela Dam were opened on Saturday after a rise in the reservoir’s water level, according to officials, while the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued an alert to warn of potential flooding along the banks of the Indus River.

In a statement, the PDMA warned that the release of water through the spillways would lead to an increase in the flow of the Indus River, with discharge levels expected to rise between 260,000 and 270,000 cusecs.

The disaster management authority directed district administrations to remain on alert and closely monitor local populations living along the riverbanks.

Officials warned that the increased water flow could lead to flood-like conditions in low-lying areas adjacent to the river.

Residents living near the Indus River, especially fishermen and livestock herders, were advised to relocate to safer ground to avoid any risk posed by the rising waters.

The PDMA also urged the public to remain vigilant and to contact the helpline 1700 in case of any emergency or untoward situation.

In order to prevent any unfortunate incidents, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Irfanullah Mehsud issued a warning, urging people to stay away from the banks of the Indus River. The district administration confirmed the spillways opened at 12:30 pm on Saturday.

A special appeal has been made to residents of Kund, Khairabad, Jabi Mandori, Shuangi, Mamakhel, Kahi and other surrounding areas: avoiding the river is crucial for saving lives.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) predicted possible floods and increased water flow in the River Kabul and Indus due to rain from July 13 to 14.

According to NDMA, a flood of low level is expected in the River Kabul at Nowshera. Increased water level is also expected in the River Swat, Panjkoora and nullahs due to rains.

People living in these areas are urged to adopt precautionary measures and avoid crossing streams and nullahs during rains.

They are also requested to download the disaster management app of NDMA for assistance and guidance.
