Layoffs have continued in the technology industry throughout 2024, but May saw a significant drop compared to previous months. According to layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks global job cuts, 39 companies laid off a total of 9,742 employees in May. This represents a significant drop from the 21,473 layoffs reported by 50 companies in April.

Google cuts core team Google has laid off about 200 employees from its core team, reportedly affecting engineering positions in Sunnyvale, California. The cuts are reportedly part of a workforce reduction drive that began last year when Alphabet announced plans to reduce its workforce by about 6%.

Indeed lays off 1,000 employees: Job search site Indeed laid off about 8% of its workforce in May 2024. The layoffs primarily affected the company’s U.S. employees. A second round of layoffs affected employees in research and development and other teams responsible for delivering products to customers.

Toshiba to lay off 4,000 employees Toshiba has announced that it will cut 4,000 jobs in Japan as part of the company’s restructuring efforts. The cuts represent 6% of Toshiba’s domestic workforce. In addition to the job cuts, the company also plans to relocate some of its office functions from central Tokyo to the west in the city of Kawasaki.

TikTok has laid off 1,000 operations and marketing staff worldwide. Popular short-form video platform TikTok has laid off 1,000 employees worldwide. The layoffs affected employees in its operations and marketing teams. While TikTok has provided few official reasons for the layoffs, industry analysts have speculated on several potential factors. Some have suggested it could be a cost-cutting measure in response to the ever-changing regulatory environment affecting social media giants, among other things.
Walmart announces job cuts and reassignments Walmart is reportedly cutting staff and asking employees at its various technology locations to reassign. The largest retailer has been cutting staff for some time, and the layoffs are expected to affect its own employees. The exact number of employees who will be laid off or asked to reassign is not yet known.

Microsoft Cuts Jobs in Gaming May was a month of job cuts at Microsoft’s gaming division. The tech giant reportedly closed several developers, including Redfall developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Studios. IGN reports that some of the affected employees will be relocated, while others will quit. It is unclear if the layoffs are part of the cuts the company announced earlier this year.

Tesla cuts jobs: Elon Musk’s Tesla has laid off employees across its software, services and engineering divisions. The company has reportedly laid off more than 6,700 workers across multiple locations in Texas, California and elsewhere.
