BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Today’s forecast: Temperatures will continue to be a bit warmer today, reaching the mid 90s Fahrenheit in many areas.

First Alert Forecast: Friday, June 21st

Factoring in humidity, the heat index (feels like temperature) could reach nearly 105 degrees in some areas this afternoon.

The chance of precipitation today is forecasted to be around 30%, with the only hope of any relief being a few flurries. The wind won’t help much either, but it will be mostly gusting between 5-10 mph throughout the day.

Coastal flooding

While the weakening winds are bad news for heat protection, they’re good news for the ongoing coastal flooding problem. A coastal flood watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. tonight, but water levels are likely to have peaked in most areas as Alberto moves inland and winds weaken.

Weekend Outlook

High pressure moving in from the east will bring increased heat through the weekend. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s Fahrenheit, with heat indexes reaching 105 to over 110. Heat Watches may be in effect for parts of the region by Sunday or Monday.

Expansion Outlook

Heat will remain a concern through early next week, with the heat index expected to reach its highest point by Monday. The good news is that humidity will increase next week and scattered showers and thunderstorms will return. Daily precipitation chances are 40% to 60% with highs in the low to mid 90s.

Tropical Update

A new tropical storm may form in the Bay of Campeche this weekend. Regardless of its exact strength, it is expected to move into Mexico on a similar path to Alberto.

The National Hurricane Center also continues to monitor a low pressure system just east of Florida, which was forecast at 1 a.m. Friday with a 50% chance of strengthening and could briefly become a tropical storm today before reaching the coast.
