SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Former tennis player Mardy Fish won his second American Century Championship Celebrity Golf Tournament on Sunday, beating NHL player Joe Pavelski by four points.
The 42-year-old Fish earned 26 points on the modified Stableford scoring system at Edgewood Tahoe to finish with a score of 83, one short of the record set by Billy Joe Toliver in 2010. Players are awarded one point for par, three points for birdie and six points for eagle, with two points deducted for double bogey or worse.
“I’ve won a couple of celebrity golf tournaments, so I’ve won in Dallas and Maine, so it was a relief coming here,” said Fish, who also won in 2020. “And this is a tournament I really want to win. The American Century is really the Super Bowl that caps off the rest of the year.”
Pavelski, the Dallas Stars forward who has said he likely will retire after 18 NHL seasons, had 29 points Sunday.
“When you’re chasing fish, you know you just have to get the ball and win, so I had to make some putts,” Pavelski said. “I felt like I closed his lead a little bit, and then all of a sudden, the lead was gone.”
Former LPGA Tour star Annika Sorenstam finished in third place with a 68 after a 27-point round.
Charles Barkley finished minus-4 points and tied for 58th, his best finish in the tournament in more than 25 years.
“It feels really good,” Barkley said. “I’ve put a lot of time and effort into it. I’ve been working really hard over the last few years. The last two years haven’t been bad, actually. I played really well the first two days and then today’s round, I struggled at the beginning but I managed to hang in there, so I’m proud of it.”
Fish won $150,000 of the $750,000 prize.
