Texans sign RB Cam Akers

The Texans are adding another weapon to their increasingly strengthened offense.

Veteran running back Cam Akers will sign with Houston, according to multiple reports.

Akers, a second-round pick of the Rams in 2020, has had a roller-coaster career, bursting onto the scene late as a rookie with 171 rushing yards in Thursday night’s win over the Patriots and then adding 221 rushing yards in two playoff games.

He had high expectations heading into 2021. Then, right before training camp began, he ruptured his Achilles tendon.

Akers then returned to the postseason that year, scoring 172 runs in four games and starting in the Super Bowl win over the Bengals.

The following year, he started slowly and was eventually cut from the team. He was a trade target, but was ultimately not traded and the relationship was repaired. He finished the year with three straight games of 100+ yards rushing.

In 2023, he again left the team after playing in one regular season game, being traded to the Vikings after Week 2. He played in six games with the Vikings but again ruptured his Achilles tendon.

There was speculation he would return to the Vikings, where the starting running back is Aaron Jones, with Ty Chandler as No. 2.

In Houston, Akers will likely play behind Joe Mixon and Damion Pierce and, if healthy, would add depth to the Texans at the position.

And if the Texans play to their full potential, Akers could end up with his second Super Bowl ring.
