One of the hotly contested races in Tuesday’s primary runoff elections is between Republican candidates vying for the 91st House District in Tarrant County, Texas.
This is a rematch of two years ago between incumbent Rep. Stephanie Click and challenger David Rowe.
Last time, she won by less than 800 votes.
Both are anti-abortion, but they disagree on specific policies.
Click, who has the endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott, told CBS News Texas that his proudest accomplishments were getting the heartbeat bill and the state’s near-abortion ban passed by the Texas Legislature.
The state law, which Click helped draft, allows for an exception only if the mother’s life is in danger.
Rowe, who is supported by Attorney General Ken Paxton, told CBS News Texas that he supports the Texas Republican Party’s platform of giving unborn children equal protection under the law.
Click said he disagrees.
“We have the strongest anti-abortion bill in the country,” Click said. “We have heartbeat bills, trigger bills. The bill that he supports would impose the death penalty on women who have abortions. I don’t support that. I believe abortion should be abolished in Texas and no woman should ever be on death row.”
“I support the Texas Republican Party’s platform on abortion, which is the same law that not only protects you and me, but protects everyone else, including the unborn,” Roe said.
Asked whether the mother or doctor could be charged with murder, Rowe said, “If anything goes forward, that’s up to the court. But as a Republican, you can’t blame me for supporting the Texas Republican Party platform.”
Click and Rowe will discuss other issues this Sunday morning on “Eye On Politics.”
We also discuss the primary runoff election for Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, who is facing the toughest challenge of his political career.
If he loses, the political repercussions could be felt across Texas when the next legislative session begins in early January.
Eye On Politics is available to watch on air and stream on Sundays at 7:30am.
