Mayor Michelle Wu announced the 30 recipients of the Legacy Business Awards on Wednesday, recognizing small businesses from across Boston’s neighborhoods that have contributed to their communities for more than a decade.
The honored businesses represent 19 of Boston’s 23 boroughs and have been in business for a combined 1,281 years, according to a statement from the city of Boston.

According to Yelp, Boston is home to some of the best small businesses in the United States.
“Our heritage businesses are the backbone of our communities, connecting residents with resources and expanding access to opportunity for families across Boston,” Wu said in a statement.
The city defines a legacy business as “a long-standing, independent enterprise that contributes significantly to the character of a community.”
Now in its second year, the Legacy Business Program’s goal is to “enrich the cultural vibrancy of the City of Boston” while providing employment opportunities for residents and giving small businesses the chance to increase their impact.
More than 1,500 nominations were submitted to the Mayor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, representing 276 businesses, according to a statement. Businesses had to meet certain criteria, such as being located in Boston and having been in business for at least 10 years. A committee made up of representatives from Boston’s Main Street and other city departments reviewed and selected the winners.
The 30 winning companies will be recognized at a public awards ceremony and reception on June 4.
“This program is designed to provide ongoing support and services to our awardees and other small businesses across the city,” Alisha Porsena, director of small business affairs for the city of Boston, said in a statement. “We look forward to working with our local partners to help these businesses continue to thrive.”
