It was effectively India v India at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, as the T20 World Cup favourites beat the US, a team made up largely of immigrants, many of them from India, to qualify for the Super Eight stage.
The stadium was buzzing with blue energy throughout the match, with the majority of the crowd made up of Indian supporters, but also a few Indian-American fans, some of whom were wearing jerseys with both teams’ names on them.
Vinay Manhas, who traveled from North Carolina for the game and wore a hat emblazoned with the American and Indian flags and carried an American flag, told USA Today that he has lived in India for more than 30 years and that in his heart he roots for his hometown team, but that he’s hoping for a win for the U.S. in today’s game.
“I’m so happy that cricket has finally come to the United States,” Manhas said, adding that he is seeing growing interest in cricket among his friends in the U.S.
A few couples were also seen in the crowd, with one partner wearing an Indian team jersey and the other a US cricket team jersey.
SeatGeek previously told USA TODAY that Wednesday’s match was the second “most popular” game at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, the first being Sunday’s India vs. Pakistan match. Wednesday’s match was also the last game at the New York Stadium before the stadium is soon to be demolished and the area cleared.
Summary of India vs USA match
India won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch that has proven to be shaky, but the US cricket team remained unfazed and confident after consecutive wins and gave the Indian players tough competition, scoring runs.
The US team tried their best to contain India, with Silicon Valley sensation Saurabh Netravalkar dismissing India’s best batsmen, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early in the match, but the partnership between Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube proved fruitful for India, helping them to secure a win against the US.
India also comfortably beat the United States after receiving a five-run penalty for missing the 60-second mark to start a new over three times during their innings, a new rule recently introduced by the ICC.
Speaking after the match, Sharma said he was proud of Yadav and Dube for keeping their cool, forging partnership and carrying the team through to the end, and praised the team’s bowlers, particularly man-of-the-match Arshdeep Singh, for giving the team a “perfect start” and dismissing the opening batsmen.
Vice-captain Aaron Jones, who took over as captain after skipper Monunk Patel recovered from injury, said he was proud of the way his bowlers “kept the game close” and that it was “great to watch.”
Jones said the team had held several meetings to prepare and would “give it their all against Ireland” in the next game.
When is the next match between USA and India?
The USA will next face Ireland on Friday, June 14 at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida.
Meanwhile, India will next take on Canada at the same venue on Saturday, June 15.
