A Missouri restaurant has a strict age restriction that prohibits anyone under 30 from entering in order to “maintain a sexy, adult atmosphere.”

Bliss Caribbean restaurant opened in St. Louis County in May. The restaurant announced on social media that month that it would impose an age limit on customers.

“As a Black-owned business, Bliss Caribbean Restaurant is committed to bringing a fine dining experience to North County,” the Facebook post reads. “To maintain a sexy, adult atmosphere, we limit patronage to women 30 and over and men 35 and over. This policy helps maintain a sophisticated environment, upholds our standards, and supports the sustainability of our unique atmosphere.”

The announcement sparked debate on social media and prompted staff to discuss the policy with local news outlet KSDK. Assistant manager Erica Rose said the restaurant aims to be a haven for customers looking for a relaxed, adult experience.

“Restaurants are a place where older people can come, enjoy happy hour, eat good food and not have to worry about young people causing drama,” Rose said.

She added: “I would tell young people, when you’re 30 or 35, come and rely on us because we intend to be here for a while.”

Marvin Pate, who owns Bliss Caribbean restaurant with his wife, acknowledged the policy has drawn criticism.

“Obviously we get some backlash because of our policies, but that’s OK. We stick to our guns,” Pate told the outlet.

Pate said the response to the policy has been mostly positive, and the restaurant mentioned it in a June 3 Facebook post.

“We’re proud to keep our space mature and sexy, while exuding a sophisticated yet safe vibe,” the post read. “Thank you so much for all the love and support that’s gotten us this far!”

A representative for Bliss Caribbean Restaurants did not respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
