The Dallas Stars seem to enjoy keeping their fans on edge with a consistent theme of coming back and defying expectations after losing the first game of the playoffs.

In four of the last five best-of-seven meetings, the Stars have won the series after losing Game 1, a record that’s almost unheard of in the NHL. Teams who have lost Game 1 in league history are 247-522, but the Stars seem to have the talent to overcome obstacles, even if it means heartbreak for their fans.

“The main thing is, we have to survive and find a way to move forward,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said, as reported by NHL.com. “We have to give up this game. We’ve been in this situation before. We’re the best away team in the league, so we’re not worried about that. We just have to find another level in our home games and the wins will come naturally.”

In Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, the Stars displayed their signature scoring prowess this season in a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. It’s the tenacity and determination that Devore has instilled in the team since joining in 2022.

DeBoer knows how to lead his team to victory in highly competitive playoff series and to the pinnacle of a chance to hoist the Stanley Cup. But despite a stellar coaching resume and a career record of 612-421, DeBoer has never been the ultimate winner. In Dallas, DeBoer had a stellar career, going 99-42 in just two seasons and leading the team to back-to-back playoff appearances.

DeBoer has led two teams to the Stanley Cup Finals, his first with the New Jersey Devils in 2011-12, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings, and his second with the San Jose Sharks in 2015-16, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Stars are a great opportunity for DeBoer to overcome obstacles and achieve his ultimate goal for the first time in nearly a decade. The team has shown remarkable resilience in recent years, including coming back from behind to win series. Under DeBoer, the Stars bounced back from a Game 1 loss to beat Minnesota, Seattle, Vegas and Colorado. Last season, the Stars were eliminated in six games by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Finals.

A win in Game 2 on Saturday would set up an epic Game 3 on the road. The Stars are coming off their best record on the road in the NHL this season with 26 wins, 10 losses and five ties. A win in Alberta could be the catalyst that propels the team to the finals and a showdown for the Stanley Cup.
