Greensboro, North Carolina – Jamie Arnold (Florida State University), Tyler Bremner (University of California, Santa Barbara) and Alton Davis II (University of Georgia) worked together to freeze Chinese Taipei’s batting line and pitch a no-hitter as Team USA won, 9-0, at First National Bank Field in Greensboro, North Carolina on Tuesday, July 2.

It was the first no-hitter by a collegiate varsity team since July 1, 2015, when pitchers Tanner Hauck, A.J. Pack and Ryan Hendricks held Cuba hitless, 2-0, to a win at the National Training Complex.

What actually happened

  • Team USA (4-0) quickly put bad luck on the scoreboard as four runners homered in the first inning. Nolan Shubert (Oklahoma State) walked and then scored on a wild pitch, and Max Bellew (Texas State) singled to bring home Dean Curley (Tennessee State). Devin Taylor (Indiana State) singled to score the final run of the inning, and the Stars and Stripes capitalized, taking a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
  • The Americans added two more runs on a two-run homer down the left field line by Caden Bodine (Coastal Carolina) to take a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning.
  • The Americans added three more runs in the top of the sixth on two RBI singles by Shubert and Bellew to extend the score to 9-0.
  • Davis II was solid on the mound over the final two innings, and Belewille got the final out of the no-hitter by catching a tailing liner down the right field line.

Notable Stats

  • The U.S. team made history by having three pitchers combine for 14 strikeouts: Arnold led the way with seven in the first four innings, Bremner struck out four in three innings, and Davis II struck out three in the final two innings.
  • The Stars and Stripes were active again on the basepaths, with Bellew stealing four bases and Bodine stealing one, and Bellew also stealing two as he circled the bases in the sixth inning.
  • Shubert also walked three times, reaching base a total of four times, singled with one RBI and scored two runs.
  • Bellew and Bodine each scored two runs for the U.S. Team. Bellew drew two walks and scored three runs, while Bodine drew one walk and added one run.
  • For Chinese Taipei (0-4), Huang Chieh-han, Chen Pin-hung and Hung Chen-yi each struck out two batters, totalling eight batters faced.

On deck

Team USA will conclude the 21st World Baseball Softball Confederation-sanctioned USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series on Wednesday, July 3 at 6:35 p.m. at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, North Carolina. The varsity team will then conclude the tour with an intrasquad game on Thursday, July 4 at 6:35 p.m. at Segura Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
