COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Tarejah Mitchem said her store lost more than $1,400 as people walked out the front door with unpaid items. The latest of two separate incidents occurred Thursday night.
“It’s really heartbreaking for us, especially since it’s new to this area,” Mitchem said. “This is a family-run business. It’s just us and our staff running the store.”
Mitchem told 11 News she was shocked that people walked away with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. She said they loaded the cart, loaded it into the back of the car and drove away.
Not once, but twice in 7 days.
“I think it’s the fear of, oh, are they going to come back? Is this going to happen again?” Mitchem said.
The family-run discount store has been open since November. She said thefts have increased since the store changed its closing time from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
According to My Neighborhood Update Dot Net, a CSPD-recommended site, 398 robberies were reported across Colorado Springs in the last month alone.
Mitchem says he just wants it to end.
“We want to create a safe environment for our staff. We don’t want them to feel unsafe or uncomfortable working here because you never know if someone is going to come in and try to steal a bunch of stuff. ,” Mitchem said.
