1909 – Jim Thorpe makes his professional baseball debut with Rocky Mount of the ECL, forcing him to give up his Olympic gold medal.

1938 – Jimmie Foxx of the Boston Red Sox sets an MLB record by drawing six walks in a single game.

1970 – Bears running back Brian Piccolo dies of cancer.

1975 – The Milwaukee Bucks traded Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the Lakers.

1981 – The Chicago Tribune buys the Cubs from the Wrigley Chewing Gum Company for $20.5 million.

1985 – Willie Banks breaks the triple jump world record with a jump of 58 feet, 11.5 inches at the U.S. Championships in Indianapolis.
