JAMMU: Security forces launched an extensive search near the India-Pakistan border in J&K’s Kathua district on Sunday night to trace three armed men who were spotted in the hills and forest belt. On May 4, his IAF convoy of two trucks was ambushed and fatally injured in Poonch district. Corporal Vicky Pahade was killed in the attack and four of his IAF colleagues were injured.
Officials said a special police officer (SPO) reported seeing three men carrying weapons and backpacks at Tarna Nala near Jangi Chak in Hiranagar district. Military drones and dogs were used in the search. However, no breakthrough has been found so far. An official said, “Nothing suspicious has been found so far, but the operation is continuing.”
Security measures have been strengthened, with increased inspections of vehicles and individuals, especially on border roads within the district.
Earlier, a large-scale search operation was carried out on May 14 after villagers in Jahor Jutana forest area of Kathua district reported sighting of five to six armed men. On May 11, J&K Police released sketches of six foreign terrorists.
According to official sources, Ilyas Fawzi, a former Pakistan army SSG special forces turned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative, and two other terrorists of Pakistani origin, Abu Hamza and Handoon, have infiltrated IAF personnel. He was identified as the mastermind of the attack. Pakistani terrorists are also suspected of being involved in the April 28 gunfight in Basantgarh in which a village defense guard was killed.
