Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie Woods, has qualified for his first USGA championship.
Woods shot a 1-under 71 on Wednesday at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla., to qualify for the U.S. Junior Amateur in July. He was one of four qualifiers out of 85 competitors who advanced on Wednesday.
Woods led the field despite a tough start, with a bogey and double bogey on the first two holes, before recording five birdies and one bogey to finish one under par.
“I didn’t play well the first two holes, but then I played really well the last 16,” Woods told The Associated Press. “I just told myself not to take any more bogeys or doubles, and when I had birdie opportunities, I took advantage of them.”
Tiger won the U.S. Junior Amateur three times from 1991 to 1993, becoming the youngest winner in the tournament’s history at age 15, the same age as Charlie.
Charlie, a high school freshman, has played with Tiger multiple times at the PNC Championship and is often by his father’s side when Tiger plays, and he accompanied Tiger to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst last week, playing a practice round with his father.
Tiger has won nine USGA championship events, the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship three times, as well as the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur three times.
“The USGA means a lot to me,” Charlie said Wednesday. “I want to win a USGA championship and hopefully one day win the U.S. Open.”
