The internet has seen people do weird and interesting things like washing shredded cheese to remove anti-caking agents or making countless trendy butter boards. Coffee has also been a frequent topic in many TikTok trends. Remember Korean Dalgona Coffee? Now there’s a new iced coffee trend on TikTok that’s garnering mixed reviews because it uses a totally unexpected and delicious ingredient that you probably have in your pantry or garden: scallions, or green onions.
Yes, that’s right. Adding scallions or green onions to iced coffee or lattes is a recent trend that has taken off in cafes across China, the country that also brought us the grilled ice cube craze. We’re starting to see a pattern here in what makes food trendy and popular: its shock factor. Adding a generous helping of chopped green onions to your iced coffee or latte makes for an interesting-looking, Instagram-worthy drink. But the taste of this creation is interesting, to say the least.
TikTok user Golden Brown Coffee recreated the trending drink, commenting that “it doesn’t even disguise the flaws. It’s awful.” However, it’s important to understand that the trending iced coffee drink is part of a series of “dark dishes” from China. TikTok user louisliu86 points out that these dark dishes are meant to suppress appetite and encourage dieters in China to eat less.

Spring onions are often used in Asian desserts
While half of internet users agree that this coffee has no place in our world, more open-minded people have tried the trending scallion iced coffee trend and found it interesting. Some even comment that the drink invigorates them and is very nourishing. For us, this trend may seem unique and strange, but in Asia, scallions or green onions are used in not-too-sweet pastries, cakes, breads and cookies. For example, in Asian bakeries, you can easily find chiffon cakes studded with scallions and pork floss, or cookies with pork lard and scallions. In these cases, scallions are only a small element of the baked goods, sprinkled here and there. But in this trending iced coffee, the star is the green onion, which is generously crushed at the bottom of the cup and decorates the drink.
To be honest, I’m intrigued but haven’t yet taken the plunge to try making this much-talked-about iced coffee drink myself. For now, I plan to keep the spring onions I have at home in my porridge, miso soup, stir-fries, and the occasional chiffon cake. But if I were to add spring onions to my coffee, I might add a little spring onion oil and garnish it with a spring onion stalk to use as a stirrer, just like a barista might add olive oil and butter to an iced coffee or latte.
