I’m going to hit a home run.
Perhaps the most exciting event of MLB All-Star Week is the 2024 Home Run Derby, which takes place on Monday night.
Eight sluggers will take part in this ball-smashing contest at Globe Life Field, but this year’s format will be different, as every batter who hits a home run will have an equal chance to advance and ultimately win. The Home Run Derby has always fascinated fans because of how far the ball can be hit, but so will the outfielders as they try to catch all the balls that will undoubtedly be hit.
Here’s what you need to know to make sure you don’t miss out on that moonshot home run.

2024 Home Run Derby Format
The 2024 Derby won’t be a full bracket-style competition. In the first round, all eight batters will have an equal chance to hit as many home runs as possible. After the first round, the top four sluggers will advance to the semifinals. The semifinalists will be seeded 1st through 4th based on home runs, and from there, the penultimate round and final will be a bracket-style competition.
There are also limitations on the time and number of pitches a batter is given. In the first round and semifinals, batters each have three minutes or a total of 40 pitches, whichever comes first, to hit as many home runs as they can. Batters are each given one 45-second timeout, which they must use before the allotted time expires, but are given bonus time if they hit a home run longer than 425 feet. In the finals, the two batters have two minutes or 27 pitches, whichever comes first, before bonus time is awarded.
