Rick Bowness came off the ice after the Winnipeg Jets suffered their final loss of the season and were eliminated from the playoffs, dissatisfied with his performance and the way his team was playing. Then he realized this had to be the last NHL game he coached.
“My coaches always told me… they always said you’ll know it’s time,” Bowness said. “At that point, I just knew it was time.”
Bowness announced his retirement on Monday after 38 seasons in the NHL. His acclaimed career includes leading the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 and spending more time behind the bench than anyone in league history.
“When I retire, I just want to be remembered,” Bowness told reporters at a news conference in Winnipeg, fighting back tears. “I just loved the game and respected the game. I love this league. I respect the league.”
Health issues for himself and his wife, Judy, also influenced his decision, but it was more than just the disappointment of losing to Colorado in five games. In the end, Bowness did enough in his remaining time to lead the Jets to a franchise-record 52 wins and a second consecutive postseason appearance, and to be a finalist for the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year for the first time. Bowness, 69, became the league’s oldest head coach. The news of his retirement was met with many well-wishes from people he’s known over the decades in the gaming world.
“Today, I’m hearing from players that you played with, and that was a long time ago, but from all over the world, just guys that you coached,” Bowness said. “They’re in Europe and I get emails from them. It’s friendships and people you meet.”
The Moncton, New Brunswick native appeared in 2,726 games as a coach in some capacity, mostly as an assistant in a number of positions up until 1984. He is one of only three people to coach for 50 years, along with Hall of Famer Scottie. Bowman and Pat Quinn.
Peter DeBoer, who replaced Bowness as Stars coach, said, “He has spent his entire life in the hockey world and is rightly respected by all of his coaching colleagues, but he is also honored by the players who have influenced him throughout his career, especially in the league. It was not immediately clear whether associate coach Scott Arniel, who filled in for several games this season when Bowness was out for personal reasons, will be considered as a possible replacement.
