PRAGUE (AP) — Connor Bedard again scored twice and added an assist as Canada defeated Denmark 5-1 at the World Ice Hockey Championship on Sunday for its second straight victory.
Dylan Cousins, Dawson Mercer and Pierre-Luc Dubois also scored for Canada, and goaltender Jordan Binnington stopped 19 shots in the Group A game in Prague.
Center John Tavares joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time after losing the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins and recorded an assist.
Bedard also scored twice in Canada’s 4-2 win over Great Britain in the tournament opener on Saturday.
The 18-year-old Bedard took the lead 2:24 into Sunday’s game when he weaved through traffic in front of the goal and fired a shot from the blue line.
Cousins doubled the early advantage with a power-play shot into the roof of the net.
Vedal added a second goal early in the final period with a one-time shot from close range.
With two minutes left, Denmark pulled goaltender Frederic Dischaud, Dubois won on a power play, and Canada added its fourth goal with Mercer into an empty net.
Christian Weisse cut the lead to 2-1 with a rebound in the middle.
Last year’s bronze medalists Latvia defeated France 3-2 in extra time in Group B in Ostrava. In the same group, star defenseman Erik Karlsson led Sweden with two goals and one assist, defeating newcomer Poland 5-1.
In Group A, Nico Isier scored a hat trick with 51 seconds remaining and added an assist as Switzerland defeated Austria 6-5.
Sweden and Switzerland have two wins from two games.
Prior to this, Finland achieved its first victory by shutting out newcomers Great Britain 8-0.
Oliver Kapanen scored a hat trick and Mikael Granlund had four assists as Finland bounced back from a 1-0 penalty shootout loss to hosts Czech Republic in their opening game.
Finnish goaltender Emil Larmi made 14 saves in the shutout win in Prague.
For Britain, it was their second consecutive loss after losing to Canada 4-2 in their first match.
Slovakia also recorded their first win in Group B with a 6-2 victory over Kazakhstan.
