DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — South-central Pennsylvania has seen a lot of rain so far in 2024, washing out revenue for outdoor businesses.
The region has already received more than 4.6 inches of rain above average this year, including nearly an inch of rain already in May.
That left outdoor-based businesses like Dauphin Highlands Golf Course with reduced revenue during the normally busy spring months.
“We probably had about 10 days total of double-digit losses,” Dauphin Highlands general manager Robert Burke said. “If you look at this, it means there’s a lot of money to be made, especially in the spring. Everybody’s chomping at the bit to get out here. There’s a lot of weekends, a lot of weekends are lost in the golf industry. “And in any hospitality industry, you earn money every day. ”
Burke said this has resulted in a 10-15% drop in revenue for the course.
Excess rain has affected nearly every outdoor industry, including landscaping, and many local landscape contractors told FOX43 today that their projects have been held up as a result of lost work days.
More rain is in the forecast this week, but Burke said his course will “ride out” any bad weather.
“It’s natural,” Burke said. “You can’t fight nature. You’re going to lose. We’re going to try to stay positive and keep moving forward and keep this place as nice as possible for when the sun comes out.”
