Here are some key takeaways from this year’s report:
- The number of Medicare Advantage enrollees continues to grow, with MA penetration reaching 54.7% as of 2023, exceeding the 50% expected in 2023. February 2024.
- FFS inpatient discharge instruction rates in home health and skilled nursing are gradually approaching pre-pandemic levels but remain more stable than year-over-year changes.
- Annualized change in home health care (-3.0% between the 3Q2022 and 3Q2023 reporting periods) and skilled nursing (-13.8% between the 4Q2022 and 4Q2023 reporting periods).FFS hospitalizations continue to decline due to increased MA enrollment.
- Hospice admissions increased 2.1% between the Q4 2022 and Q4 2023 reporting periods. Additionally, hospice utilization increased to 49.8% in the Q4 2023 reporting period, 4 percentage points higher than the Q4 2020 reporting period. This is due to lower utilization during the pandemic, when COVID-related deaths typically are not admitted to hospice.
