Mars the Label runway show at this year’s Miami Swim Week
Memorial Day Weekend marks the start of summer, but the season really gets going thanks to the Miami Swim Week® shows. Known as the largest swim festival in the world, this year’s lineup did not disappoint, with over 100 local and international designers showcasing their brands in the heart of Miami Beach. While we can’t cover every fashion show in detail, here are some of the resort and swimwear trends that emerged from this year’s runways. Pastel colors, iridescent and sparkly fabrics, animal prints, high-waisted bottoms, embellishments and cut-outs were all part of the imagination.

Emma Savard Couture’s fairy-inspired, survival-themed collection was a strong statement piece, centered around the making of each piece. Ripped, twisted and pleated fabrics were used to create a “soaked” feel, but somehow I pictured Halle Berry in the famous James Bond scene in “Die Another Day” as she emerges from the ocean. Here she is. The same pastel-hued collection from African-made resort and swimwear label Liberty and Justice was feminine and easy to wear.
A great example of using embellishment to dazzle was the Carukia Swim runway show. The cut-out dresses sparkled under the bright stage lights. Olivia London Swimwear also beautifully used special accents like shells, rhinestones, and beads. After all, swimwear doesn’t always have to be practical.
Iridescent and shimmery fabrics were all over the place this week. Kita May Designs showed off a collection of swimwear in solid, shimmery fabrics, without prints. Cutouts in a variety of designs stood out. Beach Club was all about iridescent micro bikinis, which made me want to go to boxing class a little more often. Jo Bella’s Haitian Doll was vibrant with iridescent purples, pinks, and greens. At the other end of the color spectrum, Mars the Label featured deep browns, nudes, and pops of color mixed with modern metallics. Moda Minx also featured iridescent cutout swimsuits.

Venus showed off a retro-inspired collection with lots of colour and print – and speaking of prints, animal prints are set to remain popular. Elle® Resort Wear Collection, Las Canas and Amarot Swimwear were just a few of the brands showing off their wild side.
The cover-up was just as important as the swimsuit itself, and Lesley Amon had some super cool crocheted cover-ups that were perfect for transitioning from beach to dinner to clubbing on your summer overseas destination. To complete each finished look, models strutted down the runway in Arezzo shoes.

Now in its 10th year, the Miami Swim Week® show did not disappoint. The brands featured are creating resort wear and swimwear in more luxurious, imaginative and sustainable ways, inspiring us to think outside the box of traditional swimwear. Get ready to rock the boat this summer!
