Trump attacks ‘border czar’ as Harris VP selection nears

After Trump named Vance his running mate at the Republican National Convention this month, Vance said he agreed with Trump’s position and would leave the issue up to the states. “In my view, Donald Trump is the leader of the Republican Party and his views on abortion are going to dominate this party and move the party forward,” Vance said on Fox News last week. He said it was “reasonable” for states to have different reproductive rights laws.

Democrats have successfully centralized their message on abortion and debated the issue in the 2022 election. Republicans have struggled to gain footing since supporting the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, and with at least 10 states having abortion-related amendments on the ballot, Democrats see abortion as the party’s biggest winnable issue.

“House Republicans and candidates’ enthusiastic support for J.D. Vance is not surprising given their shared extremism, outdated views on women, and deeply unpopular plans to ban abortion nationwide,” DCCC spokeswoman Lauryn Fangen said.

Harris has made abortion rights a top priority during her time as vice president and during her campaign as Biden’s running mate. Now that she’s the Democratic frontrunner, she’s already working to keep the issue at the forefront. She blasted Trump in a YouTube video after Iowa banned abortions at six weeks today. “This means that one in three women of reproductive age in America lives in a state where Trump’s abortion ban is in effect,” she said.
