Former US President Donald Trump, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claimed that if he does not win the 2024 presidential election, it could lead to a major war in the Middle East, possibly even World War III. Trump met with Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Friday.
The meeting between the two world leaders came a day after Netanyahu met with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. “If we win, it’s very simple. Everything will be resolved very quickly,” Trump told reporters at the start of the meeting. “If we don’t win, we will have a major war in the Middle East, possibly World War III,” Trump told the Israeli prime minister. The Hill report.
“We’ve never been closer to World War III since World War II. We’ve never been closer because we have incompetent people running the country,” he added.
Trump and his predictions
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Trump has spoken about World War III: the former president has previously said that the fighting in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, have put the world on the brink of a new world war.
The former reality TV star also predicted the stock market would crash if he does not win the November election. This was the first time Trump and Netanyahu met since he left the White House in 2020. Relations between the two have been strained ever since Netanyahu congratulated Biden on his victory in the 2020 presidential election.
Trump has criticized Netanyahu since the start of Israel’s war with Hamas, but during Friday’s meeting he sought to underscore his support for Israel, citing the administration’s decisions to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and impose sanctions.
“We’ve had a great relationship. I’ve treated Israel better than any president has ever treated them,” Trump declared. After Netanyahu and Biden’s meeting, the White House expressed optimism that a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages held by Hamas were within reach. But it remains to be seen whether Netanyahu’s meeting with the three will lead to a fruitful end to the war.
