Turkey-Pakistan ties go beyond mere diplomatic relations. They are a testament to the enduring bond between two pivotal nations in the Islamic world. Rooted in a common history, culture and a shared vision for the future, the relationship has evolved into a multifaceted partnership spanning defence, economic, cultural and social dimensions.

Turkey and Pakistan’s historical ties date back to the Ottoman Empire, a symbol of Islamic power and a centre of arts, science and culture. During World War I and the Turkish War of Independence, the people of the Indian subcontinent provided immense support to the Ottoman Turks. This support was both moral and financial. A deep emotional and spiritual brotherhood was forged. Today, vestiges of this friendship can be seen in the streets of Lahore. Allama Iqbal Street pays tribute to the philosopher and poet who envisioned a united Islamic Ummah with the Ottoman Caliphate at its centre.

Historical ties, fraternal socio-political affinity and common cultural heritage underpin Turkey-Pakistan defense cooperation. Soft power initiatives such as cultural exchanges and solidarity on issues pertaining to the Islamic community have laid the foundation for a strong defense relationship. Defense industrial cooperation has resulted in joint production of cutting-edge military equipment. These initiatives demonstrate the synergy between the defense industries of the two countries. Additionally, they also foster technological exchanges.

Recent developments highlight the continuing growth and diversification of Turkey-Pakistan partnership. High-level military dialogue and defense ties underscore the two countries’ resolve to strengthen bilateral defense and security cooperation. The recent conclusions of the 18th High-Level Military Dialogue Group reaffirmed the momentum of defense cooperation. Discussions covered a wide range of areas, including training exercises and joint production of military equipment. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) have strengthened the economic partnership. Strategic discussions aim to increase bilateral trade to USD 5 billion in the near future.

Both Pakistan and Turkey maintain well-trained and equipped armies to cater to the needs of their armed forces. Both countries have developed excellent defense industrial setups. The diversity of ideas and perspectives on various conflicts such as Pakistan, Kashmir and global Islamophobia has brought the two countries and their armies closer together. Hence, joint exercises and trainings between the two countries are a common but enjoyable sight.

Economic Partnership

Turkey-Pakistan economic cooperation is expected to further expand. This growth is driven by mutual interests and complementarities. Strategic discussions between high-level officials are focused on leveraging existing agreements. The two countries are also exploring new avenues for cooperation. The establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Pakistan aims to attract investments and promote business ventures. Discussions on Turkish FDI potential in areas such as corporate agriculture and agricultural machinery highlight the mutual benefits of economic relations. Plans to establish Turkish bank branches in Pakistan demonstrate a commitment to strengthening economic ties. This commitment spans both government and private sector levels.

Cultural Exchange and Social Welfare

Cultural exchanges play a vital role in fostering ties and promoting mutual understanding between the people of Turkey and Pakistan. Initiatives such as the “Turkish Cultural Season in Pakistan” and educational exchanges foster friendship and appreciation for each other’s traditions. The two countries have shown solidarity in times of crisis. Turkey has provided assistance during natural disasters in Pakistan. Pakistan has reciprocated with support and relief efforts when Turkey is in need.

Challenges and policy considerations:

Despite the progress in the partnership, Turkey and Pakistan face challenges that require careful consideration and strategic planning. Navigating global pressures and addressing economic constraints are the primary focus. Alignment of strategic interests is also key. Establishing joint crisis management protocols is essential. Strengthening civil society engagement and facilitating frank discussions on mutual threat perceptions is essential. These steps are vital in building a resilient defence relationship.

Turkey-Pakistan relations are a shining example of the transformative power of friendship and cooperation. Built on common history, cultural affinity and strategic imperatives, our two countries are poised for a future of peace, prosperity and mutual respect. Navigating the complexities of our modern times, Turkey and Pakistan remain united. Both countries are committed to realizing a shared vision for the development of their own countries and the entire Islamic world.
