It was the first time since 2015 that so many golf fans tuned in to watch Sunday’s crucial U.S. Open match as Rory McIlroy bogeyed the second hole at Pinehurst, No. 72, and Bryson DeChambeau made par to win.
NBC Sports released ratings for the 124th U.S. Open on Tuesday, saying more than 11 million viewers tuned in on NBC and Peacock from 6:15-6:30 p.m. and 6:30-6:45 p.m., making it the network’s best 15-minute peak for the U.S. Open since 2015.
The final round drew a total of 5.9 million viewers throughout the seven-hour broadcast, making the 2024 U.S. Open final round the most-watched final round on the East Coast since 2013. That was up 9% from the last East Coast U.S. Open, held in Brookline, Massachusetts in 2022, according to data from Nielsen and Adobe Analytics.
The coast-to-coast distinction comes because four of the past 10 U.S. Opens, dating back to the 2014 tournament at Pinehurst, have been played on the West Coast and finished in primetime in the Eastern U.S.
NBC’s main broadcast of the U.S. Open drew 3.1 million total viewers, up 13% from 2022 and surpassing viewership for the past six East Coast U.S. Opens.
Last week’s tournament was also the most-streamed golf event in NBC Sports history, and Sunday’s final round became Peacock’s most-streamed telecast, breaking the record set during Thursday’s first-round broadcast.
