PARIS — Chris Juliano, Jack Alexie, Hunter Armstrong and Caleb Dressel won Team USA’s first gold medal of the 2024 Olympic Games in the final race of the swimming season opener.
On Saturday, the American quartet beat Great Britain, Australia and China in the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay at La Défense Arena in Paris. As they won the gold medal, the four Americans raised their arms to show off their muscles.
The United States finished in 3:09.28. Australia won the silver medal (3:10.35) and Italy won the bronze medal (3:10.70).
Their swim earned Dressel his eighth Olympic gold medal. The other three Americans in Saturday’s final had just one medal of each color combined. But this was not a one-man team, or even a Dressel-led effort.
Giuliano and Alexie, both 21, qualified ahead of Dressel at the U.S. Trials. Armstrong recalled his coach once calling Alexie “the next Caleb.” Dressel said it’s rewarding to lead the next generation of U.S. men’s sprinters.
And a month later, together they helped put the United States on the gold medal list at the Paris Olympics.
