UK General Election Live Updates: Britain is voting for the first time in more than five years, with much of the focus on whether Conservative Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who has been in power for almost 14 years, can fend off a challenge from Labour leader Keir Starmer. Some opinion polls predict that Labour will win more than 400 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.
Who are the leading candidates? Sunak, who has been prime minister since October 2022, will lead his own party into the election. His main opponent is Keir Starmer, the former director of public prosecutions in England and leader of the Labour Party since April 2020. However, other parties could also be important in forming a coalition government. The Scottish National Party, which advocates Scottish independence, the Liberal Democrats, and the Democratic Unionist Party, which seeks to maintain ties between the UK and Northern Ireland, are currently the three largest parties in Parliament after the Conservatives and Labour.

As the UK heads to a general election on Thursday, July 4, all eyes are on Labour leader Keir Starmer, who is expected to win a landslide victory and become the first Labour prime minister to take power since 2010. He is credited with reviving the Labour Party after its worst election defeat since the 1930s. Starmer, who entered Parliament just 10 years ago, not only made the party electable but also led it to the centre on key policies by delivering scathing criticism of the mistakes of three Conservative prime ministers, The New York Times reported. read more
