UK Prime Ministerial Election 2024: The Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, is aiming for a landslide victory that would put an end to 14 years of rule by the Conservative Party, currently led by Chancellor Rishi Sunak. Exit polls after the UK election showed that the Labour Party would win a landslide victory, riding on growing anti-government sentiment among the public.
Keir Starmer’s promise to be an agent of change has resonated with Britons as they lose credibility in the Conservative party as they blame it for the post-Brexit economic crisis, scandals and political turmoil. With the official results of the UK prime ministerial election yet to be announced, here’s everything you need to know about Keir Starmer, who is likely to become the UK’s next prime minister.
Who is Keir Starmer?
Keir Starmer was Leader of the Opposition for four years, driving the party from the ideological left to the political centre, and his message to voters throughout the election campaign was that a Labour government would bring change – reassuring change, not scary change.
Before joining the opposition, Keir Starmer served as prosecutor for England and Wales from 2008 to 2013. According to the Associated Press, Starmer was previously called “the left-wing London lawyer” by the opposition.
He was knighted for his work heading the Crown Prosecution Service, and his Conservative opponents like to use the title “Sir Keir Starmer” to portray him as elitist and naive.
