HYDERABAD: Two Telugu men who ran in the UK general elections failed to win when the results were declared on Friday. Labour’s Uday Nagaraju came second behind his Conservative opponent Richard Fuller in North Bedfordshire, while Dr Chandra Kanneganti came third in Stoke-on-Trent Central constituency. Both men are of Indian origin and have roots in Telangana and have lived in the UK for decades. Nagaraju’s defeat came despite his party winning a landslide victory in Friday’s polls, though his constituency is a Conservative stronghold. Fuller won with 19,981 votes (38 per cent) while Nagaraju only managed 14,567 votes (28.3 per cent). The constituency, which has 78,850 voters, recorded a total voter turnout of 65 per cent. “It’s a close race and every vote counts,” Nagaraju said during the election campaign, urging voters to support Labour. Born in Karimnagar and educated in Warangal and Hyderabad, he moved to the UK for higher studies over two decades ago and has been here ever since. Nagaraju is a distant relative of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and has been active in politics for some time. Dr Kanneganti also moved to the UK about three decades ago after completing his medical studies from NIMS, Hyderabad. Originally from Nizamabad, he entered politics 17 years ago and is working as a private practitioner there. Dr Kanneganti contested in the Stoke-on-Trent Central constituency, which was won by Labour’s Geis Snell. Kanneganti secured 14,950 votes (42.4% votes) to come third with 6,221 votes (17.6% votes). The constituency has 73,693 eligible voters and the turnout on polling day was 48%. Mr Canneganti previously served as a councillor and Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent City Council from 2021 to 2022.
