The group stage of Euro 2024 is nearing the end with much still to be decided, including who will secure a place in the top four and three places.
After two matches in each group, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia and Albania were within the qualifying zone, but that could change in the coming days.
But once that’s decided, how will it be decided who plays who in the last 16? BBC Sport finds out.
How will the best third place team be determined?
According to UEFA, the top four teams in the top three places will be determined according to the following criteria, in this order:
A. A large number of points
B. Better goal difference
C. High score
D. More wins
E. Reduce disciplinary points totals based solely on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials during group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, ejection for 2 yellow cards in one match = 3 points)
F. Overall European Qualifier Rankings
How will the last 16 matchups be decided?
Currently, the standings for teams in the top three are as follows: The top four teams advance, while the fifth and sixth place teams are eliminated.
Of course, there will be many twists and turns ahead, but if the final group match ends like this, the teams from Groups D, E, C and B will advance as the third-placed teams.
This is one of 15 possible combinations that could theoretically progress in this way, and UEFA have produced a table showing which teams will face which in the last 16 for all these outcomes, which can be seen below.
In the above, WB, WC, WE, WF represent the winners of Groups B, C, E, F, and these teams will play against the team ranked third in the qualifiers.
The final standings of the top three teams are irrelevant because who will play who is decided in advance.
As mentioned above, the teams currently advancing are the third-placed teams from Groups B, C, D, and E, in alphabetical order.
If that happens, the round of 16 matchups will be as follows:
WB vs 3E
WC vs 3D
WE vs 3B
WF vs 3C
