Top Democratic leader and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee after President Joe Biden resigned over concerns within the party that he would not be able to beat Republican Donald Trump.
Harris, 59, is the likely Democratic presidential nominee after receiving endorsements from President Joe Biden, who announced on Sunday that he would not seek reelection, and other senior Democratic Party figures, including former President Bill Clinton.

“Today, with great pride and boundless optimism for our nation’s future, I nominate Vice President Kamala Harris for president of the United States,” Pelosi said in a statement.
Speaker Pelosi, 84, is a highly-ranked figure within the Democratic Party, so her support is significant.
“Publicly, Kamala Harris has shown strength and courage as a champion for working families, especially by fighting for a woman’s right to choose,” she said.
“Personally, I have known Kamala Harris for decades as someone rooted in strong values, beliefs and a commitment to public service. Politically, make no mistake, Kamala Harris is an incredibly bright woman in politics and I am confident she will lead us to victory in November,” Pelosi said.
Biden’s withdrawal on Sunday over Democratic concerns about his fitness for the presidency marks a major shift in the presidential race, upending the two major parties’ carefully crafted plans for the 2024 election.
Seeking to end weeks of intraparty bickering over the 81-year-old Biden’s candidacy, prominent Democratic lawmakers, party leaders and political groups quickly endorsed Harris hours after she announced she was dropping out of the reelection campaign.
