President of the United States Joe BidenHe came under pressure to withdraw from the presidential race after a poor debate performance and appeared to lose the support of a childhood friend and longtime supporter. Jay PariniIn his heartfelt letter, Parini expressed concern about Biden’s ability to successfully lead the country as president for another term, pointing to Biden’s age, at 82. “Our bodies don’t function the way they used to. Sometimes it hurts to get up in the morning,” Parini, an author and poet, wrote in a CNN opinion piece.
Biden has remained defiant and insists he is the right person to win the election in November. US Presidential Election He gave a dismal performance during Thursday’s debate, frequently faltering, stumbling over his words and losing his train of thought, raising concerns about his ability to serve another term. “I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t talk as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know how to tell the truth. I know how to do this job. I can get knocked down and get back up,” he said to huge cheers.
But Mr Parini said he was “moved to tears” by how “old, pale and frail” Mr Biden looked, and called on his childhood friend to make history by handing the presidency to a stronger Democratic candidate.
“He would hand Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a blank cheque. NATO would be put at risk. Economists say he would impose huge tariffs on imports from China and elsewhere, stoking inflation,” he added.
Parini listed several well-known Democrats, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Gov. J.B. Pritzker, as alternatives to Biden. “The best Democrats should be running against Trump in November. Any one of them could beat him,” he added.
In her closing remarks, Parini called on Biden to “be the great man you are” — the dynamic and respected man he has been for decades. “We salute you. We know it’s going to be hard, but your final act is right in front of you,” she said.
Biden’s stuttering and sometimes incoherent responses during the debate, in which he laid out a string of falsehoods on everything from the economy to immigration, have raised concerns among voters that he may not be fit to serve another four years in office.
The editorial board of The New York Times, which endorsed Biden in 2020, slammed Biden’s campaign as a “reckless gamble” in the face of Trump’s threat. “The biggest public service Mr. Biden can do now is to announce that he will not run for reelection,” the paper said.
