US presidential election: Polls show Kamala Harris has better chances than Biden, trailing Trump by a narrow margin

NEW DELHI: US Vice President Kamala Harris, who is of both Indian and African descent, has a better chance of winning the White House in the upcoming presidential elections in November than President Joe Biden, according to a recent CNN poll.

The 81-year-old president’s approval rating has plummeted following his poor performance in the recent debate with former President Donald Trump in Atlanta.

Since the debate, there have been growing calls within the Democratic Party for Biden to withdraw from the race and allow another candidate to run in the crucial presidential election on Nov. 5. A CNN poll conducted by SRS shows Trump leading Biden by 6 points.

Interestingly, the poll also shows Harris trailing Trump in a hypothetical matchup, with results showing that “47% of registered voters support Trump and 45% support Harris, within the margin of error suggesting there is no clear leader in this scenario.”

The poll attributes Harris’ slight lead over Trump to “broad support among women (50% of female voters prefer Harris to Trump, compared with 44% for Biden) and independents (43% for Harris, 34% for Biden).”

Asked about the poll results, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment directly, saying the issue was a campaign matter, but said she believed the president’s record and accomplishments were consistent with the majority of Americans.

Jean-Pierre also noted that “with age comes wisdom and experience,” qualities that the president possesses.

A separate Ipsos poll showed former first lady Michelle Obama leading Trump by 11 points, 50 percent to 39 percent, but her office announced in March that she would not run for president this year.
