Hayes was named manager in November but stayed in Europe until the end of the season with Chelsea. He replaced Vlatko Andonovski, who resigned after the U.S. was eliminated in the round of 16 at last summer’s Women’s World Cup.
The U.S. also beat South Korea 4-0 in a friendly on Saturday in Commerce City, Colo. Mallory Swanson and Tianna Davidson each scored two goals.
Hayes will now turn his attention to selecting the 18-player roster for the U.S. Olympic Team, which opens its Olympic campaign on July 25 against Zambia in Nice.
Hayes made significant changes to his starting lineup for Tuesday’s game, played in a steady rainstorm at Allianz Field in St. Paul, with only captain Lindsey Horan and Jenna Nyswonger remaining in the starting lineup on Saturday.
Alex Morgan, who missed the first match against South Korea due to a minor injury, was also named in the starting lineup.
Dunn, starting at forward for the first time since 2017, scored from a Nyswonger cross in the 13th minute. Dunn, who has played primarily at left back in recent years, had not scored since October 2018. Dunn has 25 career goals.
Casey Murphy dived to smash a free kick into the goal in the 30th minute to protect the lead.
Smith scored his fourth goal of the year in the 67th minute, receiving a backheel pass from Swanson from a tight angle.
Johannes, who plays for Dutch club Ajax, scored just 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the match, scoring in the 82nd minute after scoring in a scramble after receiving a cross from Trinity Rodman, becoming the third-youngest player to score for the Netherlands national team.
Midfielder Rose Lavelle played her 100th game for the United States.
The team has two more games before departing for France, taking on Mexico at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey on July 13, before a send-off match against Costa Rica in Washington DC.
