USA Favours! Florida Storms Threaten to Beat Pakistan and Take USA to T20 World Cup ‘Super 8’ | Cricket News

A tropical depression is causing an unprecedented flooding crisis across much of Florida, threatening to cancel three Group A matches of the T20 World Cup scheduled for later this week.

The impact of three consecutive cancelled matches being realised will be huge in determining which team India advances from Group A to the ‘Super 8’ stage of the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States and the Caribbean Islands.

T20 World Cup: Schedule | Points Table

The top two teams from each of the four groups will progress to the next stage of the ICC’s flagship T20 event.

Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida, is one of three stadiums in the United States that will host some of the group stage matches of the T20 World Cup.

A disappointing loss in any of the three matches would be a huge benefit to the United States, as co-hosts will make a historic bid to the Super 8 in their first appearance at the tournament, and 2009 champions Pakistan will be on the next plane home.

As things stand in Group A, Pakistan will be desperate for results in the matches as their progress in the tournament depends not only on a win against Ireland on June 16 but also on a good result in the USA vs Ireland match on June 14.

The current standings for teams in Group A are as follows:

1. India – 3 Games, 6 Points (NRR +1.137) – Qualified for the Super 8
2. USA – 3 games, 4 points, (NRR +0.127)
3. Pakistan – 3 Games, 2 Points (NRR +0.191)
4. Canada – 3 games, 2 points (NRR -0.493)
5. Ireland – 2 games, 0 points (NRR -1.712)

Group A has three games remaining, all of which will be played in Florida.
– USA vs Ireland (June 14)
– India vs Canada (June 15)
– Pakistan v Ireland (June 16)

Based on the standings and fixtures above, if the USA-Ireland match is cancelled, the US would receive five points and advance to the Super 8 along with India, but the other three teams would be eliminated, making the Pakistan-Ireland match irrelevant.

However, if the weather is good, the outcome of the USA vs Ireland match would be that Pakistan would want Ireland to beat the USA, which would mean Pakistan would have to beat Ireland to advance to the Super 8. If the USA beat Ireland, Pakistan would advance.

But forecasts suggest Florida’s weather may have the last laugh.

The mayors of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood declared states of emergency for their cities on Wednesday, but the National Hurricane Center reported the disturbance has not yet reached cyclone strength.

“Regardless of evolving conditions, heavy rainfall is expected to continue across parts of the Florida peninsula over the next few days,” the National Hurricane Center said on its website Wednesday.

The Miami Weather Service issued warnings and watches for the approaching storm.

“Life-threatening flooding is ongoing. Stay off roads and seek higher ground,” the agency posted on its Twitter account “X.”
