USA Swimming’s annual National Diversity Select Camp will be held June 13-16 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The roster will include 55 age-group swimmers from across the United States, three more than the 2023 roster of 52. The experience is said to include pool training, motivational education sessions and team-building activities.
The camp’s main purpose is to “instill a vision of success and inspire athletes from ethnically underrepresented populations to become leaders in the sport of swimming.”Past participants include Olympic medalists Simone Manuel, tori husk, Jay Litherlandand Natalie Hines.
The roster will be selected from submitted applications and athletes must record a time standard for at least one National Diversity Select Camp to be considered. These standards are AAAA National Motivational Times for the 13-14 year old age group.
All athletes are between the ages of 14 and 16, and selection is based strictly on times at USA Swimming sanctioned meets. All individuals listed on the directory receive free accommodation, meals, airfare, and ground transportation.
USA Swimming says the goals of the camp are to:
- Demonstrating the potential for multicultural success in swimming
- Achieve outstanding performance at all levels of sport
- Explain in detail the benefits and value of participating in the sport of swimming.
- Become a positive leader and role model that others from multicultural backgrounds can emulate
The camp specifically coincides with the U.S. Olympic Trials, scheduled for June 15-23 in the same city. However, this is no coincidence, as all participants will be heading to the first night of his 15th Olympic Trials.
