USA Swimming announced the roster of 112 young swimmers selected to participate in the 2024 Zone Select Camp this summer. Among them are National Age Group (NAG) record holders. Shareef Elaidi and David Sammons.
Traditionally, USA Swimming hosts four zone selection camps, each with 56 athletes and a total of 224 spots available. However, this year, the national governing body changed the selection criteria after the qualifying period ended in August last year, cutting the number of opportunities in half and merging the four camps into two combined events, citing the reason for the Olympic delegation in June. I mentioned the selection. USA Swimming’s website currently carries a disclaimer that states, “Selection criteria are subject to change up to the time of selection.”
The Western and Central Zone elective camps will be held from May 30th to June 2nd at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center. The Eastern and Southern Zone selection camps will be held June 6-9 in North Carolina. It consists of four in-water training sessions and various classroom sessions.
Although USA Swimming reduced the number of spots for swimmers, it also expanded educational opportunities for coaches at a cost of $100 for an individual coach or $200 for teams of up to four people.
“The Home Coaches Track provides a special opportunity for coaches to learn, connect and network across the USA Swimming community,” he said. Marijo Truex, Senior Director of Team Services, Coaches and Athlete Development for USA Swimming. “In order to provide more opportunities for coaches across the country, we will be opening limited coaching clinics at each location. This two-day clinic will be accompanied by his coach at his home truck and will be an opportunity for coaches to meet each other. They will be able to interact and learn in an interactive clinic format.”
The target age groups were girls aged 12 to 13 and boys aged 13 to 14, with the top swimmers from each Olympic event earning a ticket to the Zone Select Camp. Athletes who have represented the United States internationally, even in junior events, are not eligible for selection (with the exception of open water).
This year’s National Select Camp roster was created by 87 different clubs and 37 Local Swimming Committees (LSCs). Nations Capital Swim Club (NCAP), Rockville Montgomery Swim Club (RMSC), and SwimMAC Carolina were the most represented, with four of their athletes each qualifying.
