Terence Samuel is leaving USA Today after a year as editor in chief.
Samuel “was a valued colleague during his tenure at USA Today,” USA Today senior vice president Monica Richardson said in a statement. “We wish him the best of luck and thank him for his contributions.”
Karen Bohan, USA TODAY’s political editor, has been named interim editor-in-chief as the company conducts a national search for its next editor-in-chief.
Bohan, a veteran White House reporter and former president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, joined USA Today in 2018 as Washington editor and then became politics and Washington editor in chief. He was promoted to politics editor in March. Bohan spent nine years as a White House correspondent for Reuters, reporting around the world and interviewing both Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
“I am honored to take on this new role leading such a great team,” Bohan said. “I am excited to see the USA Today team continue the great journalism they have been and will continue to deliver.”
Before joining USA Today to succeed Nicole Carroll in July 2023, Samuel served as executive vice president and editor in chief of NPR News. He also held senior editorial roles at The Washington Post and The National Journal.
Richardson, a former vice president of local news and mass markets at McClatchy, became senior vice president at USA Today in April.
Karey Van Hall, former news editor at POLITICO, joined USA TODAY as deputy editor in late 2023. Tabassum Zakaria joined the USA TODAY leadership team as editor of planning and enterprise in early 2024 after serving as deputy editor at the Miami Herald. Roxanna Scott was named editor in chief and vice president of sports in April 2022.
Shares of Gannett, the parent company of USA TODAY, have risen nearly 100% this year and were trading at $4.73 as of 11:44 a.m. ET.
