Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark said she found out she missed the Paris games over the phone. The national team’s head coach said earlier this year that Clark’s outlook for the upcoming games was bright. “There’s no question she’s going to be an Olympian. She has a long, great career ahead of her,” coach Cheryl Reeve said. A number of veteran players are headed to Paris, including Stockton’s Chelsea Gray. Gray, a product of St. Mary’s High School, now plays for the Las Vegas Aces. She was also on the Tokyo Olympics roster. Another big name on the roster is Brittney Griner, who will be playing her first international game since being held captive in Russia for 10 months. Veteran Breanna Stewart also made the roster. “This is the best of the best,” Stewart said. “I’m not going to say no. Any time I can represent Team USA and put USA on my chest, I’m in it.” Next month, the women will train together for a few days in the U.S. before playing in exhibition games overseas and then the Olympics. The team has a strong tradition to uphold: the U.S. women’s basketball team has won every gold medal since the 1996 Atlanta Games. The unofficial Olympic roster for the U.S. women’s basketball team was leaked over the weekend, and while it includes some big names, it does not include others.
Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark said she found out by phone that she would not be able to compete in the Paris tournament.
The national team head coach said earlier this year that Clark’s outlook for future matches is bright.
“There’s no doubt she’ll be an Olympian. She has a long, great career ahead of her,” coach Cheryl Reeve said.
A number of veteran players are heading to Paris, including Stockton’s Chelsea Gray.
The former St. Mary’s High School player currently plays for the Las Vegas Aces and was on the team for the Tokyo Olympics.
Another big name on the player list is Brittney Griner, who will be playing her first international match since being detained in Russia for 10 months.
Veteran Breanna Stewart also made the roster.
“This is the best thing,” Stewart said. “I would never say no. Any time I can represent Team USA and have the USA on my chest, I’m going to go.”
The women will have just a few days to train together in the United States before heading off to exhibition games overseas and the Olympics next month.
