The U.S. women’s soccer team will try to replicate its strong start to the 2024 Paris Olympics but will face a much bigger test in Germany when its group stage continues on Sunday.

The USA edged out Zambia 3-0 to move level on points and goal difference with Germany, who thumped Australia in their opening match, for the top spot in Group B. With a Zambia player sent off in the 34th minute, 3-0 could have been 5-0, 6-0 or even worse. Trinity Rodman opened the scoring and Mallory Swanson scored two goals in the space of a minute to make it 3-0, but the USA Women’s National Team seemed to prioritize possession and stayed that way until the end.
Perhaps this was deliberate on the part of new head coach Emma Hayes, who was managing the time with a keen eye to prepare her team for the tougher, more tactical challenges of the knockout rounds.

The U.S. Women’s National Team currently has two injured players. Jaidyn Shaw will miss the season opener after suffering a foot injury in training this week. Sophia Smith was forced to leave the game against Zambia just before halftime with an injury of her own but returned to training for this match. Croix Bethune replaced Shaw in the 18-man match squad (a new rule change for these Olympics) and Lynn Williams was on the bench in place of Smith.
Germany’s focus: team news
Germany entered the tournament as one of the few teams expected to compete for a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and they looked like a gold medal-worthy team in their first match. Marina Haegering opened the scoring in the 24th minute, before Leah Schuller and Yule Brand closed the game with goals in the 64th and 68th minutes. Germany dominated the 12th-ranked team in the world, allowing just eight shots on goal in the match.
