Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written a letter to the recently deposed former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, expressing his sympathy over the recent election results which were a setback for Sunak.

Pointing out that victories and defeats are a part of the journey of democracy, Rahul Gandhi said, “Victories and setbacks are an inevitable part of the journey of democracy and we have to accept both with equanimity.”

The Congress MP also praised former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his dedication and commitment to the nation. Rahul emphasised that Sunak’s efforts were crucial in strengthening India-UK ties.

“Your dedication to public service and commitment to your nation is admirable and I deeply value the efforts you have made to strengthen India-UK ties during your tenure in office,” the Congress MP wrote.

Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, resigned after the Conservative Party suffered a major loss of seats, bringing an end to 14 years of power. His premiership lasted just 20 months, beginning amid political turmoil within the party. Despite the defeat, Sunak left a notable mark for his pioneering role and the many achievements he made during his time in office.

Sunak will be sworn in as leader of the Conservative Party on Diwali Day in October 2022, and then take over No. 10 Downing Street, becoming the youngest prime minister in 210 years and Britain’s first non-white leader.
