Virginia Tech football: 4-star WR Matthew Outten joins the Hokies

The Virginia Tech Hokies started the holiday week with a bang on Monday, signing their largest recruit to date: four-star wide receiver Matthew Outten committed to the Hokies over other finalists Penn State, Syracuse and Maryland.

This is a big recruiting win for head coach Brent Pry and wide receivers coach/ace recruiter Fontel Mines. Outten was atop Virginia Tech’s board, so it meant a lot to them to get a player the school coveted over Penn State. Outten’s commitment was similar to last summer’s recruitment of Kieren “Brody” Adams. Adams, the top receiver and arguably the top player in the state, chose the Hokies over a number of other interested schools, including Alabama and Ohio State.

The 6-foot-0, 200-pound Norcom plays for IC Norcom in Portsmouth and is ranked as the No. 6 player overall in the state of Virginia and the No. 139 player in the country in 2025, according to 247Sports.

Watching Auton’s highlights shows he’s a player who could be a contributor from day one for the Hokies. He’s big, fast and electric with the ball in his hands. Auton plays defensive back, is a kick returner and is a track and field star at Norcom.

The Hokies have a deep wide receiver corps now and for the foreseeable future. Outten is the second receiver the Hokies have signed for 2025, joining Green Run (Virginia Beach) forward Jaeden Anderson. In addition to Adams, the Hokies also signed Chants Wiggins last year. Tech will lose its top four wide receivers (Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane and Stephen Gosnell) after next season, so there will be plenty of playing time in 2025.

It was another great day for the Hokies.

Welcome back, Matthew.
