Virginia Tech football players want to follow in NFL greats’ footsteps in Blacksburg

Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry on Thursday announced that defensive lineman Christian Evans has committed to the Hokies, making him the sixth player from the state to do so. It wasn’t a surprise when he committed there, as he was expected to land in Blacksburg.

After making his commitment, Evans spoke to rival.com about why the four-star defensive edge rusher decided to join the Hokies and how he wants to follow in the footsteps of some of the greats who have put on a Virginia Tech uniform.

“As the top player in the state, it means a lot to me to play at the top school in the state. I met with Coach Pry and he started talking about the future of the program and where he wants to take them. He was talking about how to get Tech back to where it was and how to get the top players in the state of Virginia back. I want to follow in the footsteps of some of the Virginia greats that came before me – Mike Vick, Bruce Smith and DeAngelo Hall. They were there and Tech was so good. So I feel like by me coming there it will send more ripples throughout the state of Virginia.”

– Christian Evans

If one thing is clear about Brent Pry and his staff, it’s that they are heavily focused in Virginia when it comes to recruiting, as evidenced by the fact that six of the seven current incoming students in the class of 2025 are from the state. Pry is in his third season at Virginia Tech, and it’s fair to say the rebuild following Justin Fuente is moving along faster than initially thought.

With many players remaining on the current roster for the 2024 season and Virginia making great strides in recruiting for the class of 2025, Pry is once again creating a lot of excitement around the program. Players looking to follow in the footsteps of Blacksburg greats are now committing to enroll, something that seemed impossible not long ago.
