Wasim Akram alleges ‘player rifts’ after Pakistan’s poor performance in T20 World Cup 2024

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 has not gone as expected after they suffered two consecutive losses to co-hosts USA and India. Though Babar Azam’s team beat Canada on Tuesday, the veteran players are not happy with the cricket team’s conduct and energy. Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram slammed the Pakistan team and said the cricket authorities should replace them with a new squad.

“You can’t instill that (killer) instinct in them, it has to come from within,” Wasim Akram said ahead of Pakistan’s match against Canada. “Enough is enough, we’ve supported them enough, now we don’t care if this goes viral,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.

“Someone has to tell the truth about the Pakistan cricket (team). It’s getting a bit out of hand. Someone’s in a bad mood, this person isn’t talking to that person, guys! What is going on here? An entire nation’s emotions have been played with, there is a limit to everything,” the former pacer added.

“Enough! It’s over! Let’s bring in new kids and have a new Pakistan team. The entire Pakistani community back home and here (in the US) is depressed. They were celebrating that we have beaten (India) after a long time and against such a strong team. But they (Pakistan team) said, ‘No, we don’t want to win at any cost’,” Akram said.

Cracks in Pakistan’s cricket team

Reports of factionalism within the Pakistan cricket team have been circulating on the internet and became public after the debacle of the ODI World Cup 2023. Following Pakistan’s poor performance in the tournament, Babar Azam stepped down as captain and was replaced by pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi in the white-ball format.

Ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reappointed Babar Azam as head coach, a decision that has reportedly not gone down well with Shaheen Shah Afridi and the team’s supporters.
